1980 - 1990
In January 1981
a proposal was made that the chapel be put on the list of designated
areas where memorial funds might be used. It was asked that improvements
that would make the room more versatile for small group meetings
be made. The project was completed in 1986 at a cost of $7,050,
paid for by memorial funds from many families and donations to a
special fund.
In July 1985
Church Council approved a recommendation to replace the boiler,
redecorate the sanctuary, re-surface the parking lot, and install
an elevator and handicap restroom. By the time the project was completed
in December 1989, the cost of $132,313 had been paid off.
Clair Hochstetler,
who was employed as a part-time youth pastor from August 1986 to
May 1989, began the mentoring program for youth in 1987. Jennie
Barwick was Christian Education Director from September 14, 1986,
to December 31, 1986; Olden Mitchell was Minister of Discipleship
from March 1985 to May 1988. .
Pastor Ed Smith
resigned December 31, 1986; Christian Education Director Ruth Anna
Hoff resigned in 1986; Lila McCray became
the interim pastor until Arlin Claassen
became the full-time pastor in July 1987. Nelda
Risden became the full-time Director of Nurture and Education
in August 1988.
