James D. Buchanan Jr.
May 2, 1923 - May 8, 2012

James “Jim” Dewey Buchanan Jr., 89, of Elkhart, passed away at Elkhart Hospice House at 2:39 a.m. Tuesday, May 8, 2012.

He was born May 2, 1923, in Elkhart, to James Dewey Sr. and Gertrude (Ober) Buchanan. He married Esther Bowman on Dec. 31, 1942, and they had celebrated 69 years of marriage in 2011.

She survives along with two sons, Terry (Linda) Buchanan of Sarasota, Fla., and Jack (Trish) Buchanan of Manistee, Mich.; and two daughters, Sue (Floyd) Searer of Elkhart and Kay Buchanan of Staunton, Va. Also surviving are five grandchildren, Clay (Erin) Buchanan of Laramie, Wyo., Taylor (Nathan) Seibert of Brethren, Mich., Alex Searer and Collin Searer, both of Elkhart, and Yulia Buchanan of Staunton; two stepgrandchildren, Kevin (Tiffani) Searer of Elkhart and Craig (Cheri) Searer of Grand Rapids, Mich.; four great-grandchildren; and four stepgreat-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a grandson, Michael Simeri, and his sister, Betty Pletcher.

Jim graduated in 1941 from Elkhart High School and worked in Maryland in alternative service for three years. He was employed for 37 years at Indiana & Michigan Electric Company (AEP), retiring in 1985 as meter department supervisor. He and Esther had wintered in Naples, Fla., for 24 years.

Jim was a long-time member of Creekside Church of the Brethren (formerly Elkhart City) and had sung in the choir, served as a deacon, usher and youth counselor. He was a fan of the Cubs, Bears, IU and ND and enjoyed playing softball, basketball and golf. He also enjoyed music.

Viewing was from 10 to 11 a.m. Monday, May 14, at Creekside Church, 60455 C.R. 113, Elkhart, where a service was held at 11 a.m. Pastor Janet Shaver, Betty Kelsey, and Rosanna McFadden officiated. Cremation took place with burial at Rice Cemetery.
