Is Jesus Family Friendly?

Is Jesus "Family Friendly?" In the home where Jesus rules, there will be harmony and stability and no strife. All right, maybe just a little. "The family that prays together stays together," the old saying goes, and no one can dispute that family prayer is a wonderful thing. Jesus, however, told would-be followers that the decision for him could be costly. Families will be divided. "Don’t think that I’ve come to bring peace but a sword." "Whoever does not leave father and mother is not fit for the kingdom," is what he said. He makes us choose. The choices may be disruptive. But who says Jesus’ disruptions are bad?

Delusions of Adequacy

In worship we sing, "All I hath needed, thy hand hath provided, great is thy faithfulness, Lord unto me." If we truly believe it, then why do we spend much of our lives fending for ourselves? Why do we live as though our worth is tied to productivity, accomplishment, and accumulation? Why not stop trying to make something of ourselves and receive God’s gift of salvation and faith? Why? It is as simple and hard as this - God will make you a somebody, if you are willing to be a nobody.

I’ve got stuff. You’ve got stuff. We’ve all got stuff -- too much stuff. "You cannot serve God and money," Jesus said, but we don’t believe him. We work the percentages -- God 60%. Goods 40%. But it won’t work. "You can’t serve two masters," Jesus said. Masters are demanding. Masters are jealous. Masters expect total commitment. Masters do not concede turf to other masters, especially when their aims are different. We cannot devote ourselves to work for the coming of God’s Kingdom when we’re wrapped up in our stuff. We work for Almighty God, not the almighty dollar.

The Trinity

The Trinity is comprised of the big three -- God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit. 1 + 1 + 1= 1. Go figure. Over the centuries, many have done the math. Some speak as though they understand and they boil it down to a doctrinal formula. We’re with the majority, scratching our heads. Trinity Sunday isn’t about learning the formula. It is our attempt to get to the wonder that is at the heart of a faith. It is ponderously complex. Don’t read a doctrinal book on the Trinity before bed or you’ll be up all night. But don’t ignore it, either. Like John Donne said, "Though the Trinity is bones to philosophy it is milke to faith."

Noise That Draws a Crowd

"I’m gonna’ sing when the Spirit says, ‘Sing!’ I’m gonna shout when the Spirit says, ‘Shout!’" This suggests that Christians are supposed to be seen and heard. Pentecost recounts the day when the Holy Spirit descended upon Jesus’ disciples. The result wasn’t a quiet, orderly discussion over tea. Fire was created a second time. They were ecstatic, unconstrained, and bi-lingual. For the first time they were fearless. Bystanders accused them of being drunk, and drunk they were-- with the Spirit’s power to establish a people on earth called the church. Pentecost attracted a crowd that day, and the church added 3,000 to the membership role.

The Freedom of Dependence

Independence is highly over rated. We’ve been sold a bill of goods by voices that say life is about learning to tie our own shoes. Don’t be dependent upon others. You’ve got to take care of yourself. If you don’t, who will? The truth is we never outgrow dependence. God created us for relationship. Someone said, "The test of a Christian’s faith in and obedience to Christ is not first of all a matter of belief, but a matter of love." It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. It is the freedom of being bound to his love.

Seeing All There Is to See

"Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father in me." Christians are people who take Jesus’ words at face value. There is no need to speculate about God’s looks. There is no need to ponder what God is like. In the prologue to John’s gospel it says: "We have seen the glory of God-- in the face of Jesus." What we have seen in the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus is all we need. "Want to see God?" Jesus asks. "You’re looking at him."

The Security Gate

The keeper of the sheep is also the gatekeeper to the sheepfold. As long as sheep know their master is guarding the entrance; as long as they can hear his voice, they feel safe and secure. Of course, the sheep can’t stay within the protective confines of the sheepfold. They must “go out” to graze. Venturing into the great wide open, they are vulnerable to thieves and predators. This is why their link to their Shepherd is everything. We know what it means to live as sheep among wolves. Life isn’t safe, but we can live confidently in the knowledge that we have security in the community of faith whose shepherd is Jesus Christ.

In the Beginning

In our end is our beginning. This is Christianity’s peculiar take on life. The world tends to looks at life as means that lead to an inevitable and final end. "That’s it, folks. That’s all she wrote. The fat lady is singing. It’s over. Done." Easter knows better. What appeared to be the end for Jesus was a prelude to the resurrection. The way we see it, ends are beginnings. We are not pushed into a cold, dark abyss. We are pulled toward the Light.
