Micah 6:6-8 (NRSV)
what shall I come before the Lord, and bow myself before God on
high? Shall I come before him with burnt-offerings, with calves
a year old?
7 Will the Lord
be pleased with thousands of rams, with tens of thousands of rivers
of oil? Shall I give my firstborn for my transgression, the fruit
of my body for the sin of my soul?’
8 He has told
you, O mortal, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you
but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with
Luke 13:6-9 (NRSV)
6 Then he told
this parable: ‘A man had a fig tree planted in his vineyard;
and he came looking for fruit on it and found none.
7 So he said to
the gardener, “See here! For three years I have come looking
for fruit on this fig tree, and still I find none. Cut it down!
Why should it be wasting the soil?”
8 He replied,
“Sir, let it alone for one more year, until I dig round it
and put manure on it.
9 If it bears
fruit next year, well and good; but if not, you can cut it down.”’
