If you have to travel in winter weather...

If you're traveling by car you should always let someone know you're leaving and what route you plan on taking. Also, make sure your tank if full of gas before you leave.

It's best to carry a winter survival kit with you in your car. This should include blankets, a flashlight, extra batteries, brightly colored clothing and cloths, candles and matches, non perishable food that's high in calories, newspapers for insulation, jumper cables, and a first aid kit. It's also a good idea to have either salt or cat litter so you can give your car traction and a shovel.

If you get stranded by the side of the road, police say it's best to stay in your car. An idling car only uses one gallon of gas per hour. Make sure your exhaust pipe is clear to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning, and crack your window just a little bit to allow for some fresh air.

If you're stranded at night, leave the dome light of your car on so you're visible to others on the road, and of course, if you do have a cell phone with you, call 911 to alert them of your location and situation.
